What if my speller is ill?
Please notify us in advance (email [email protected]) if your champion will not be attending. Due to the need to stem the spread of flu and coronavirus, we specifically ask that no person who is ill or who has knowingly been exposed to recent COVID-19 or flu attend. Health is more important than a spelling bee, even if it's disappointing to miss such an event. Additionally, we will make minor changes during the bee, such as instructing spellers not to touch the microphone, and asking that people not shake hands/ high five, etc. Feel free to bring hand sanitizer, wipes, etc., and spellers will be provided abundant opportunity to wash hands.
We wanted to alert you to the ways the bee is handling flu and COVID-19 concerns:
Per the Governor's recommendations:
- We have spaced the seating out to allow for social distancing.
- We have confirmed McKimmon Center's policies: they have plenty of cleansers and will sanitize throughout the day. They have plenty of hand soap and paper towels in the restrooms.
- We will allow for adequate breaks for hand washing.
- We will set the microphone up so as to discourage children from touching it.
- We ask that anyone who is ill not attend, and that we receive notification at [email protected].
- We recommend that anyone who is high risk (immunocompromised, elderly, etc.) not attend, per the Governor's recommendation.
- We have 87 spellers, all of whom are required to bring at least one parent or guardian with them. With our 15 volunteers, we expect approximately 250 or so people and our venue holds 450 over two rooms (a large ballroom and a separate large classroom).

50 spellers nationwide have already qualified for Scripps National and we're eager to see which of our super spellers will be the one we send to Bee Week!
